Outline
The Scientific program of the SIMS-XVI conference includes all the aspects of the conventional themes and applications, which reflect the importance and versatility of SIMS technique to the problem solving in materials science. In addition, this conference especially emphasize the importance of the understanding of the fundamentals of the SIMS phenomena, both for D-SIMS and S(TOF)-SIMS researchers, which will be manifested in the non-pararell session of “Fundamentalas(I), (II)” and in the session of the “Discussion day”. This is intended to stimulate the cross-linking discussion from various stand points of views.
The program will be initiated by the two plenary talks by Professors David Castner and Wilfried Vandervorst, both of whom will contribute so as the audience from all SIMS and related fields will understand the present situation and future trend of the technique. It will also have a “Discussion Day” on Thursday, which was initiated at the last SIMS conference in Manchester. The ”Discussion Day” will have two sessions, one will be chaired by Professor Peter Williams organized as “Discussion on Fundamentals”, and the other, chaired by Professor John Vickerman, who is going to have a sequel session of the former meeting, two years ago, named as “Discussion on Bio-imaging”
Some other features of the program are that the D-SIMS session will especially pay attention to the comparison with other techniques such as High Resolution Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and Atom Probe Technique, and that the recent results of the rapid developement of the cluster ion beam technique and its application to the analysis of biomaterials will be discussed as well as the prospects of “New Ionization Techniques”, which may lead us to the new phase of the SIMS technique.
The poster sessions will be held in the evenings of Monday and Thursday and the business meeting will be held in Tuesday evening, after the scientific sessions.
